How to Apply
We have three types of admission processes at SIAST:
Find helpful information on how to apply.
Find additional information for international students.
Find additional information about special admission.
The First Qualified/First Admitted (FQFA) Process
The First Qualified/First Admitted (FQFA) process is used for the majority of SIAST programs. When we determine that you meet the program's admission requirements, you will be offered admission based on the date you fully qualify for the program. The earlier you provide the appropriate documents and information that qualify you for admission to the next intake, the earlier you might begin your studies. Your application, once qualified, is always considered for the next intake.
Applicants to programs with multiple intakes in an academic year remain in the application pool until the last intake for that academic year has begun. Programs using the FQFA process receive applications year round and maintain an application pool for each academic year. Qualified applicants who are not offered a seat must reapply for the next academic year.
Sponsored programs or programs targeted to specific groups do not accept applications year round or maintain an application pool.
Current high-school students who are enrolled in the grade level that will qualify them for admission to the program of their choice may apply on or after September 1 each year (First Qualified/First Admitted programs). Applicants to High-Demand or Competitive Entry programs may only apply during the designated application period.
High-school students or persons taking Basic Education upgrading should apply as soon as they are enrolled in the courses that qualify them for the program. SIAST accepts interim statements of marks and confirmations of registration as conditional qualifications for programs.
Reapplication opportunities exist for those who previously applied and were not successful in obtaining a seat in a program, and for those who are returning to complete their original program of study after a voluntary or required absence.
Some SIAST Kelsey Campus (Saskatoon) and SIAST Wascana Campus (Regina) program intakes have unique reapplication windows.
The High-Demand Process
A small number of SIAST programs are designated as high-demand. A high-demand program is generally one that consistently has 2.5 times more applicants than spaces available at each SIAST location at which it is offered. A review is conducted each fall to determine which programs will be designated high-demand for the following academic year.
High-demand programs have admission requirements plus additional selection criteria. Admission requirements set the minimum academic standard required for success in a program. The selection criteria for high-demand programs are broader than academic criteria. Examples of potential selection criteria include interviews, career explorations and work or volunteer experience.
Admission to high-demand programs is limited to residents of Saskatchewan. Applicants to high-demand programs are required to provide proof of residency.
International applicants are considered for admission to some high-demand programs. Refer to each program Web page for the current status of international applications.
High-school students interested in applying to a high-demand program must submit a High-Demand Preliminary Statement of High-School Standing (pdf) form (for more information on admission requirements for high-demand programs, refer to the program Web pages).
The following programs are currently designated as high demand:
- Applied Photography (program suspended April 2010)
- Combined Laboratory and X-Ray Technology
- Cytotechnology (has been de-designated for the 2011 intake)
- Dental Hygiene
- Medical Laboratory Technology
- Medical Radiologic Technology
- Power Engineering Technology (effective for the 2011 intake)
- Practical Nursing (effective for the 2011 intake)
The Competitive Entry Process
The Nursing Education Program of Saskatchewan (NEPS) and the NEPS Second Degree Entry Option, delivered in partnership with the University of Saskatchewan's College of Nursing, use a competitive admission process. Refer to the program Web pages for specific details.
For more information about SIAST admission processes, please contact Registration Services.
Check Things Out
Check the program's Web page to determine the next intake for the program, the campus to which you are applying, and to review program and course requirements. You must apply to each year's intake(s).
Email a student recruitment advisor or make an appointment with a counsellor at any one of our SIAST campuses.
Without submitting a formal application for admission to a program, students may register in continuing education courses and in most distance learning courses, delivered by home study, online and televised delivery (formerly SCN).
Be Prepared
If you have an existing and potentially limiting health condition, you are advised to research the program requirements and occupational expectations. In support of SIAST's Education Equity Program, student counsellors and program heads are available to help you.
Consider these questions:
- do you meet the admission requirements for the program you are applying to?
- have you reviewed the additional selection criteria for high-demand programs?
- have you completed a career exploration?
- have you arranged your finances?
- do you have somewhere to live?
- have you arranged child care?
- have you made transportation arrangements?
Arrange for Transcripts
- arrange for official high-school and post-secondary transcripts (pdf) (to be sent directly from the issuing institution)
- final, official transcripts must be submitted directly to Registration Services before August 1
